Thanks to your dedication and hard work, your members, stakeholders, and communities enjoy improved benefits, opportunities, and services. In the case of organizations that do charitable work volunteers have created a society that is more caring and committed to helping those in need – in this country and around the world. The purpose of A Practical Guide to Governing Your Volunteer Organization is to provide a short, self-contained guide for NPO success – a book of significant value to volunteer directors who serve on the organization’s board. It will also be of benefit to the chief executive officer (CEO) and staff members of the NPO. The book is intended to be useful to a wide spectrum of NPOs. In particular it is addressed to directors of small to mid-sized organizations, including associations, charities, and public sector groups. The material dealing with planning, governance, board training, and monitoring will also be of benefit to larger NPOs.

As past purchasers of the Compensation and Operations Report of Association Executives in British Columbia can attest, the annual Report contains a wealth of non-compensation data as well as important information about salaries and benefits.

For example, the Report contains data about the

Length of normal workweek – 35hours, 37.5 hours, or 40 hours
Length of annual vacation entitlement – 4 weeks, 5 weeks, or six weeks
Reimbursement for overtime – is the CEO and others reimbursed in cash, or in time off
Education credentials of the CEO
Insurance coverage and cost
Extent of the use of the Internet and social networking
Governance model used in the association
Percentage of directors appointed by outside bodies or by government
Prevalence of Executive Committees
Frequency of Executive Committee and Board meetings
Size of Board
Amount of stipend paid to volunteer Presidents and other Directors
Senior staff person’s title
Training of volunteer board members and the chair
Screening of potential Board members
Succession planning that takes place at the board and staff levels
Strategic planning that takes place.

AMC recognizes that this information has equal relevancy to non-BC organizations as it does to BC’s NPOs.

As a result, this year we are making the full Report available to organizations located outside BC at a special reduced price of $99 plus applicable shipping and taxes. For this amount, the organization will receive an printed version of the full Report. Please note, the organization must be located outside British Columbia to take advantage of this special offer and special price and must, of course, respect AMC’s ownership and copyright.

The Complementary Model of Board Governance
A New Volunteer Governance Model For The New Volunteer Environment

NEW TRAINING DVD NOW AVAILABLE

This newly revised version of the training DVD provides a fast paced, full description of the Complementary Model of Board Governance and covers important topics, including:

The ten principles of the Complementary Model

The ten operating features of the Model

The role of volunteers and staff in policy development

Who should be designated Chair of the organization

Who should be designated Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

The role of the volunteer Secretary and the volunteer Treasurer

How Board and CEO committees work.

Tom Abbott, B.Comm., CGA, CAE, author, international consultant and seminar leader and the developer of the Model, writes: “The Complementary Model of Board Governance allows the governors to participate in the operation of their not-for-profit organization without becoming managers. It allows volunteers to reconnect with their organization and still remain governors. In other words, it allows them to participate, as well as govern.”

This training DVD explains how the Complementary Model of Board Governance works and how it can be implemented in your organization.

The December 31, 2011 report is still available. This is the 22nd annual survey conducted by AMC. The data is as of December 31, 2011. The results of the survey are tabulated by the following employee groupings: 1; 2 to 4; 5 to 10; 11 to 20; 21 to 50; 51 to 99 and over 100. The Report contains tables by salary, related to association type, budget size, location, number of staff and employee positions. In addition, the Report provides operational data on topics such as board size, frequency of board meetings, codes of conduct, board and staff appraisals, cost of directors and officers liability insurance and much more. As well as providing important information to BC’s larger not-for-profit organizations, the survey also meets the unique needs of small and medium sized associations operating in BC.

You can order a copy of the December 31, 2011 Survey Report by paying online or by mailing AMC a cheque. Participants in the Survey can purchase a copy of the 2010 Survey Report at a cost of $99 plus HST (total of $110.88). The non-participant’s price is $199 plus HST (total of $222.88). Prices are the same as they were last year. These compare very favourably to private sector reports that can cost $600 for participants and $1,500 for non-participants.
